Strength & Dignity
She is clothed with strength and dignity; and she laughs without fear of the future.
Proverbs 31:25
Last week we talked about the connection between poverty and human trafficking. This week we will look at three women from our artisan partners and hear their stories and how learning a skill and getting a job has helped. When women in developing countries are trained and have good jobs, it leads to significant benefits for themselves, their families, and their communities. Including reduced poverty, improved health, nutrition and education for themselves and their families. This can lead to healthier children who are more likely to stay in school. Working women often reinvest a large portion of their earnings into their families, creating a cycle of better health, education, and prosperity.
Mina's Story
Mina grew up in poverty. She has three sisters and one brother. Because of her families’ limited income, they could not afford to send the children to school. Mina got married when she was 15 and had two daughters. When Mina was older, she met a non-profit organization that taught her how to write her name and helped her get a job with one of our artisan partners. Mina is one of our basket artisans and uses her income to send both of her daughters to school, buy their clothing and other needs. Mina’s dream is to one day be able to build her own home.
Tara’s Story
Tara is a producer for another artisan partner. She grew up with four sisters and was able to study up to fifth grade. After that her parents arranged her marriage at the age of 14. Tara’s husband became ill and died from an unknown disease. Tara was able to get a job with one of our artisan partners. She was able to provide for her daughter’s education, and all three daughters are now married. Tara continues to save money to help with her daughter’s future. Tara said she is very grateful to all our buyers.
Anita's Story
Anita grew up in a poor family in Southeast Asia. She is married and has a son and two daughters. Anita and her husband could not afford to buy proper food or clothes for their children. Anita was able to get a job with one of our artisan partners and learned the craft of marbling. Now her son is studying in 10th grade and one daughter is in 9th grade. Her oldest daughter is married. Anita has learned many techniques of marbling crafts. She has earned a place of honor. Anita expressed her gratitude saying, “This is a great blessing from God”.
