Poverty and Human Trafficking
Poverty creates vulnerability that traffickers exploit through desperation and lack of opportunity. It is one of the most significant factors of human trafficking because it drives individuals to accept deceptive job offers, migrate under dangerous circumstances or be sold by family members. The lure of a better life is often irresistible for those in poverty. In extreme poverty parents may sell their children in hopes the child will have a better life. Children in poverty are more likely to drop out of school to help their family financially. Poverty is not a singular cause of trafficking but a major contributing factor. We work in an area of the world where 60% of the population lives on less than $3 per day and 21% more barely survive on less than $2 per day. But – these people are not just faceless statistics. They are real mothers and fathers who love their children and want to provide for them. Rahab’s Rope exists to fight and be a voice for these real people and against human trafficking, whatever form that takes. We do this through our own centers helping women, children and families directly but also through our business model. Through our business model we can not only give women work at our centers but through other organizations and companies all over the world. We are helping them rise above this poverty line and out of the risk area of traffickers. We have spent the past week in Southeast Asia working with our artisan partners creating new products to share with you. In developing countries where extreme poverty is a major concern, we give over 2000 women and families work. We are so happy to know the product we purchase from others helps fund services we provide for women and children in our own centers. It is a win-win situation.
Thank you for purchasing our products and all the ways you support Rahab’s Rope!
