The Story of Sonu
Over ten years ago, we were introduced to a young woman—whom we will call Joy—who carried a deep passion to rescue women from the Devadasi system. The Devadasi system is an ancient religious practice originating in Southeast Asia. Historically, it once held a respected social role, where young women were dedicated to temples and educated to serve within them. Over time, however, it has tragically devolved into a system of forced sexual exploitation and lifelong servitude.
Although the practice has been declared illegal, it continues to persist under the guise of religion.
When we first met Joy, she was educating our short-term volunteers about the Devadasi system and sharing her dream: to rescue these women and provide a safe home where they could receive education, healing, and vocational training. When the time came to open that home, we partnered with Joy and have been honored to support her over the years with both financial and physical resources.
This week, we received an update from Joy, and we would like to share one powerful story with you.
The story of Sonu.
Sonu’s journey is one of incredible strength and hope. She is the daughter of a Devadasi. Under this system, a Devadasi is never allowed to marry, and any daughter born into the system is expected to carry on the same fate. Through much perseverance, we were able to convince Sonu’s mother to release her from this cycle and allow her to come live at our home. Her mother courageously agreed.
During her time in our program, Sonu learned sewing skills and developed strong computer skills. Today, we are incredibly proud to share that Sonu has secured employment at a Scan and Diagnostic Center. Her future now holds dignity, independence, and opportunity.
As Christmas approaches, we eagerly look forward to welcoming Sonu back to celebrate with us. She will share her journey, her achievements, and the hope she now carries. Sonu is a powerful example to so many young women who once believed there was no escape—who thought exploitation was their only possible future.
Thank you for your continued support and for believing in a world where young girls are protected, empowered, and free.
Blessings,
Vicki
